Darauf Ihre Antwort: “Auf Basis meiner Daten und meines Modells müsstest du eine 2.7 schreiben!”. (Darauf dis Studenti: “Hpmf.”).
Außerdem lernen Sie, wie man die Güte einer Vorhersage auf Stichhaltigkeit prüft.

Objective: To estimate the proportion of healthcare interventions tested within Cochrane Reviews that are effective according to high-quality evidence.

Methods: We selected a random sample of 2,428 (35%) of all Cochrane Reviews published between 1 January 2008 and 5 March 2021. We extracted data about interventions within these reviews that were compared with placebo, or no treatment, and whose outcome quality was rated using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) system. We calculated the proportion of interventions whose benefits were based on high-quality evidence (defined as having high quality GRADE rating for at least one primary outcome, statistically significant positive results, and being judged by review authors as effective. We also calculated the proportion of interventions that suggested harm.

Results: Of 1,567 eligible interventions, 87 (5.6%) had high-quality evidence supporting their benefits. Harms were measured for 577 (36.8%) interventions. There was statistically significant evidence for harm in 127 (8.1%) of these. Our dependence on the reliability of Cochrane author assessments (including their GRADE assessments) was the main potential limitation of our study.

Conclusion: More than 9 in 10 healthcare interventions studied within recent Cochrane Reviews are not supported by high-quality evidence, and harms are under-reported.

Statistics in a nutshell: Introduction to Statistical Modelling

Analyzing research data can broadly be classified in three parts: explorative data analysis, modeling (including inference), and visualization. Either part is pivotal in its own right, but it can be argued that modeling is at the core of the scientific endeavor. However, in practice, modeling, visualization, and data exploration is heavily intertwined, so that three parts may be recognized (as individual entities) but not usefully separated from each other. This idea provides the rationale of this course: Data exploration, data visualization and data modeling is discussed as an integrated framework.

The focus is on practical data analysis; theoretical concepts are, where mentioned, second class citizens due to time constraints and the didactic aims of the course.

The party “Alternative fuer Deutschland” (AfD) is a right-wing to far-right political party in Germany. Founded in 2013, it that has managed to gain seats in all states parliaments as well as in the federal parliament within a short period of time. The AfD became the third-largest party in Germany after the 2017 federal elections. Such striking success is quite unique in German post-war politics. Consequently, AfD’s upsurge has sparked an intensive debate as to the why’s and hows of this success. Some explanations of AfD’s electoral success have been brought forward by scholars but also some “folk theories” circulate. In this study, we test some folk theories highlighting potential causes of AfD electoral success such as unemployment, migration rate, age, and east/west cultural differences. Our data are based on the German federal election results (2017), alongside with structural data on each German electoral district (n=299). Our analysis is novel insofar as a more rigorous Bayesian multilevel modeling is applied.

Methods: Bayesian multilevel regression

Sample. All data were obtained from the Bundeswahlleiter (2017). There were no missing values, and we confirm that the data were not transformed in any other way than reported here. z-Values were used as model inputs.

Hypotheses. Three factors were hypothesized to exert an effect on the AfD votes: a) unemployment rate (positive), b) foreigner rate (positive), and c) East Germany (positive). All effects are assumed linear.

Design. The study is based on a cross-sectional, observational design thereby precluding strong causal conclusions. Predictors were selected according to widely circulating folk theories of AfD success.

Analysis. Stan was used via the R packages rstan and rethinking (McElreath, 2017). For model estimation, Hamiltonian Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) with 2000 iterations, 2 chains, 1/2 burn-in time, was used. Information criteria (WAIC) served for model comparison. In an explorative matter, we included federal state as predictor and compared the model variations.

Results: Limited support for proposed model

Interestingly, neither immigration (foreigner) rate nor unemployment rate played an important role. East Germany proved to be a more impactful predictor. However, federal state came out as the strongest predictor of AfD voting success. In sum, the multi level model state combined state, foreigner rate, and unemployment rate turned out to be best in class (cf. Table 1, model m15_stan). Figure 6 compares the (absolute) prediction errors between all models tested. The trace plot of the best model supported convergence of the model (not depicted). Figure 7 shows the mass intervals for the main coefficients of the best model. A comparison between estimated and observed AfD votes per electoral district is shown in Figure 8.

Conclusion: Unknown role of State aspects

It can only be speculated as to why the state played a pivotal role in these models. A state can be seen as a bundle of shared cultural values, local socioeconomic factors, the impact of the aging society, or the influence of local politicians, to name a few. To be clear, the present model is simplistic. It remains unknown which (causally) relevant factors have been missed out. Sadly, the field lacks strong theories that explain the pathways of voting behavior, particularly for the rise of (right-wing) populist parties. Given the importance of political liberty, and in the light of the experiences (and horrors) of populism in the 20th century Europe, it remains a duty to shed light on the whys and hows of of societal and electoral will articulation.

Steyer and Eid 1993).

The effectiveness of most cancer targeted therapies is short-lived. Tumors often develop resistance that might be overcome with drug combinations. However, the number of possible combinations is vast, necessitating data-driven approaches to find optimal patient-specific treatments. Here we report AstraZeneca’s large drug combination dataset, consisting of 11,576 experiments from 910 combinations across 85 molecularly characterized cancer cell lines, and results of a DREAM Challenge to evaluate computational strategies for predicting synergistic drug pairs and biomarkers. 160 teams participated to provide a comprehensive methodological development and benchmarking. Winning methods incorporate prior knowledge of drug-target interactions. Synergy is predicted with an accuracy matching biological replicates for >60% of combinations. However, 20% of drug combinations are poorly predicted by all methods. Genomic rationale for synergy predictions are identified, including ADAM17 inhibitor antagonism when combined with PIK3CB/D inhibition contrasting to synergy when combined with other PI3K-pathway inhibitors in PIK3CA mutant cells.

Handson data exploration with the R/tidyverse

We propose a method to predict user performance based on eye-tracking. The method uses eye-tracking-based pupillometry to capture pupil diameter data and calculates—based on a Random Forest algorithm—user performance expectations. We conducted a large-scale experimental evaluation (125 participants aged from 21 to 61 years) and found promising results that pave the way for a dynamic real-time adaption of IT to a user’s mental effort and expected user performance. We have already achieved a good classification accuracy of user performance after only 40 seconds (5% of the mean total trial time that our participants took to complete our experiment). The non-invasive contact-free method can be applied cost-efficiently both in research and practical environments.

(Wie populistisch tweeten unsere Politiker?)

Populism in tweets of German politicians

The last months (years? since ever???) have seen a surge in populism and a rise in nationalism. Not only in Russia, the United States, Turkey, but also in some EU countries the ghost of nationalism-populism seems to be marching and gaining ground.

As to Germany, in September 24, 2017, the 19. German federal elections took place. The newly founded alt-right AfD (Alternative for Deutschland) has made a leap and moved in the Bundestag. In some electoral districts, its share rose to 35%, being the strongest party (although normally its share was lower), and in total, the AfD collect 12.6% of the votes, according to the official results.

Given the “hell and back” Europe and the world had to witness in the 20th century, this backlash seems surprising and alarming. Of course, a number of ideas on the origin of populist thought and countermeasures are out there.

What’s populism?

Populism is hard to define, see Laclau, On Populist Reason. So maybe authoritarianism and nationalism are concepts more adequate to deal with enemies of open society. Another idea would be to follow Popper’s idea of what makes a society open and what are the components of a “closed” society.

Without worrying much on ongoing discussions, I have tried to define and measure populism as manifest in Tweets of German politicians. The theoretical concept is not too much elaborated (as yet), I confess, but it builds on a well-known and intriguing source, Poppers Open Society.

Poppers idea of populism

Basically, the following theoretical aspects were used for gauging populism.

The roots of the (Western) civilization may be traced to societies such as the ancient Greek clans. In the beginning (but in parts, later on too), those clans were patriarchal in the sense that there one men or one family or one cast who was ruling without any democratic basis. Basically, someone was telling what to do. And every one had to follow. Even more, know only what to do but rather what was right and what was wrong. There is, as a consequence, no place for questions and questioning or doubt and doubting in such societies. It’s pretty clear and easy what’s right and wrong, and what you ought to now. Now, modern society is quite complex, and as a consequence, it is difficult to say what will happen, and what you should do. There are much less guides and less guidance as to what the “right” way of living consists of. Poppers argues that people are suffering from this insecurity, albeit to a different degree. Especially in times of crisis, rapid change, and strong progress the desire too come back to “good old days”, with all their simplicity and security offered by strong men and strong ideas (in the sense of that they provide sure answers), rises.

Moreover, those old tribal communities consisted (often) of kinship, there were genetic similarity among the members of a tribe, compared to the people of other tribes. As a result, such tribes or rather such tribal thinking rejoices in evoking the “blood is thicker than water” ideas. You should prefer your relatives more than strangers; sounds plausible, doesn’t it? But taken farer this leads a walling-off from the outside, in the sense that outsiders are considered negative or eve as enemies. In short, the “we” as a group - family, caste, tribe, culture, people, folk - should hold together, and should regard outsiders with suspicion.

Similarly, not only our “blood” but also our “soil” is what defined (defines) us as tribal society. This is our land. Not yours. We have always, okay, at least for a long time, been inhabiting this land.

More coherently, this is our group, our land, our stories. Nobody (including myself and you, as possible parts of this group) may object to this notion. We may not even doubt, we must obey to the law of what the strong man says, and he says he knows what to know, that’s why he is strong. Admitting “I don’t know” would be considered as a sign of weakness, not of strength. Don’t propose that things could be like this, but also like that, and even this may vary from time to time or according to some unknown boundary conditions…

Such ideas provide the base of “closed society thinking”, and populism is nothing more than alluding to this thinking and supporting it.

Indicators of populism in the present research

Much more down to earth, and certainly cum grano salis to say the least, I have tried to translate Popper’s ideas into these eight indicators:

word length or rather word brevity

Number of negative connotated words vs. number of positively connotated words (odds)

Proportion of negatively connotated words

Proportion of emotional words

Score (intensity) of emotion

Score (intensity) of negative emotion

Proportion of words in CAPITAL LETTERS (shouted)

Number of adjectives vs. number of adverbs

Out of these indicators, I formed one populism measure, and I then compared political parties based on this measure. I did not want to tap too much into the individual persons, partly because an aggregated measure may be more reliable, and partly because not too be to nasty to individual persons.

Data material

I collected around 400k tweets via the Twitter API; plus approx. 30k Tweets by Donald Trump. In sum, about 200 politicians donated about 6 millions words for this analysis. Not all parties are included, only seven important, the remainder is ignored (sorry). Data was collected from several years, as provided by the API.

I think that the API prefers providing newer tweets. Note that Trump data has been accessed from the Trump Twitter Archive.

Not all parties tweet the same amount. As I have recently read on Twitter, the only 12 hours, Donald Trump did not tweet was the day he was elected President…

From some parties, I was able to find a lot of accounts, from other parties, not so many. This may of course provide some basis for bias. I have tried to find some overview or “official” list of politicians’ twitter accounts. What I found was this. In addition, I added the accounts from the Bundesvorstaende of the AfD and the FDP, because these parties were especially lacking accounts.

Reproducibility

The code is on Github, completely. In this post, I will not discuss all technical aspects, but rather invite everyone interested to read the code.

Cave and conclusion

Whereas Poppers theory certainly is compelling, the choice of indicators remains subjective. This is not unique for the present analysis, but still different sets of indicators may provide different pictures. Note that this is an explorative study. Still, this picture appears well backup by the data. What’s your impression, your thoughts? Feel free to discuss your ideas.

Case studies

A case study on data analysis is sometimes dubbed “YACSDA”, as for “Yet Another Case Study on Data Analysis”.
Well, here’s my curated list of YACSDAs.
The indented audience is students are aspiring data analysts/scientists.

All case studies are using R as the computational environment and are open eductational resource materials.
That implies that all YACSDAs are reproducible (for the most part).
